Bwongera coffee is a washing station located on Muruta hill, Gashoho commune, in the Muyinga region. Its name comes from the water spring commonly known as Bwongera. A total of 1,239 coffee farmers participate and they have 100 drying beds. The manager of the washing station is Salvator Ndabarushimana and the agronomist is Abdallah Nshimirimana.
In Burundi, almost the entire population lives off what they grow, and some 700,000 families do so directly from coffee, a product that the locals, they say, hold in their hearts. It is a landlocked country with scarce economic resources and a predominantly agricultural economy, in which coffee is vital.
With an annual production of no more than 200,000 sacks, Burundian coffee currently accounts for just over 1 % of the world market, a percentage which, although very low compared with other coffee-producing countries, accounts for up to 65 per cent of Burundi’s exports and is therefore a significant source of income for the national economy and for the more than 700,000 coffee-farming families who also devote part of their land to subsistence farming – wheat, maize, rice, plantains, etc. – to supplement their annual income with the one-off revenue from the sale of their coffee.
Coffee production in Burundi is primarily carried out by smallholder farmers, with an estimated 30% of households across the country relying on this crop for their livelihood. The farms are small, covering less than one hectare, and the average number of trees per coffee farmer is estimated to be between 50 and 250 – an ideal ratio for ensuring the trees are properly cared for and for producing high-quality coffee.
